PM 611 - Advanced Project Management

Credits: 4

This course builds on the foundation of MGMT 626 by introducing coverage of advanced topics in project scheduling, risk and quality management, and cost control as well as providing comprehensive knowledge of scheduling and other project management tools. The course also addresses the appropriate use and application of Agile Project Management.

Prerequisite(s): MGMT 626 with a minimum grade of D-.

  1. Given an organizational context and project objectives, create a project charter, preliminary scope, and project management plan according to PMI standards.
  2. Employ industry-standard tools to conduct a qualitative risk assessment according to PMI standards.
  3. Evaluate the nature of risk and opportunity within a given project and construct a prioritized risk register with a risk‐response plan.
  4. Recognize trends in a project’s quality-control data and apply appropriate quality‐control tools and techniques to address the requisite needs.
  5. Propose strategies for controlling and managing a project’s cost, schedule, and changes.
  6. Propose methods to assess project deliverables and verify alignment with charter specifications.

PM 613 - Organizational Behavior and Projects

Credits: 4

This course details the relationship between the organizations that host the projects and the projects themselves. Projects are a key vehicle for the execution of organizational strategy, and the effectiveness of that execution is determined to a large extent by the environment that the organization itself creates for those projects. This course addresses topics including project organization and context, strategic project management, and ethics and professionalism. It also explores the benefits of implementing a project portfolio management practice within an organization.

  1. Describe how project management functions within the context of organizational culture as a strategic mechanism for achieving goals.
  2. Identify and evaluate which factors affect project selection and prioritization and how they relate to organizational capability and available resource capacity.
  3. Evaluate and recommend an appropriate project management strategy for a new project to meet stakeholder expectations in a given organizational context.
  4. Assess an organization’s project management needs for a given situation and propose an appropriate project organization structure.
  5. Critique a project management approach in a matrix organizational structure and recommend methods that will successfully deliver a project considering the inherited power relationships.
  6. Assess and recommend optimal and feasible approaches to ethical project execution methods based on the inherited linkages between the organization and the project.
