Study Away Eligibility

Academic Eligibility

Students enrolled in UNH baccalaureate or Thompson School of Applied Science degree programs may participate in a UNH Partner, Faculty-led or Exchange global education program provided they meet the following eligibility criteria:

  1. Must have earned at least 32 credit hours at the time of departure, at least 12 of which must have been earned at the University of New Hampshire at the baccalaureate level.
    1. Undeclared students are eligible to participate in study abroad programs and should work closely with their academic advisor to be aware of any potential consequences relative to degree completion.
  2. Must have a minimum 2.5 cumulative grade point average at the time of application to and at the time of departure for the study away program. Study Away Programs provided by UNH or approved institutions may have higher minimum GPA requirements.
    1. For some faculty-led programs, students who have a cumulative GPA between 2.0 and 2.5 may be considered on a case-by-case basis. Students who wish to be considered for an academic variance must petition the Academic Standards and Advisory Committee or ASAC with the support of their primary academic advisor and the student’s college dean’s office.  ASAC approval does not guarantee acceptance into the individual program.
  3. Athletic Team members participating in Other International Experiences (OIE programs), including first-year students, will establish eligibility for their team trip with the Athletics department. If an athlete is participating in a regular study away program, they will need to follow the UNH study away eligibility requirements as well as any specific criteria required for the program they are applying to.

Additional Information

  • Graduate Students do not need to establish eligibility.
  • Students who seek to study-away as first-year students will need to submit a petition to request a variance in academic policy to the Academic Standards and Advising Committee (ASAC).
  • Transfer students, except transfer students from Thompson School of Applied Science (TSAS), are not eligible to study away during the first semester of their baccalaureate program at UNH.
  • Students returning from a leave of absence are not eligible to study-away their first semester back.

Eligibility and Student Conduct Policy

Students studying away must be in good standing with UNH Community Standards at the time of application, departure and while abroad; they are held to the Student Rights, Rules, and Responsibilities throughout their time abroad.

These same conditions will apply in instances where the conduct issue has been addressed through the court system rather than through the University’s Student Conduct system.

Student eligibility related to conduct will be reviewed and students will be notified if ineligible and be given the opportunity to petition ASAC.
