Military Accommodations

The University of New Hampshire recognizes the importance of supporting our military students who are called to serve this country. Military students who have received orders that will interrupt their enrollment may be eligible for accommodations as follows:

For students who receive notice of orders prior to the start of an enrollment period:

  • Due to the potential uncertainties that may come from military service obligations, it is strongly recommended that students who receive notice of orders prior to the start of an enrollment period take a military leave of absence for that enrollment period. This can be completed by contacting their college dean's office or the Office of the Registrar.

For students who receive notice of orders after the start of an enrollment period:

  • A student can elect to accept an incomplete grade, which will be recorded at the end of the term, provided that more than half of the class meetings have passed, and both the student and faculty agree to this option. A student selecting this option will have 90 days after the completion of their orders or the middle of the following semester, whichever is longer, to complete any missing assignments. Faculty of students electing the incomplete grade option must complete an incomplete grade contract that is an agreement of the terms and specifics about the deadlines and assignments. A student who does not complete the work within the 90-day period will need to repeat the course; in this case, the incomplete grade will be treated as an F and the student will not be refunded any tuition or fees. If completing course work within 90 days isn’t possible, students have the option to submit a petition to finish at a later date.
  • A student can elect to withdraw from one or more courses with a grade of “W” if the official add/drop period for the college has passed. A student electing this option will have their tuition and fees refunded or credited, whichever is deemed appropriate, without credits awarded.
  • Students who are called to serve for longer than one year will be allowed to reactivate into original program requirements as long as they can provide official orders corresponding with their absence from the College.

It is strongly recommended that students seeking an accommodation under this policy contact the Military and Veteran Services office, as well as their Academic Advisors, to discuss their options. A copy of military orders will be required to be submitted with any accommodation request.
