The Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures offers undergraduate majors in French, German, Russian and Spanish, plus minors in Arabic and Chinese. A dual major in world languages for B.S. students and an M.A. in Spanish are also offered.
In addition, the department sponsors several study abroad programs and a variety of co-curricular activities, including conversation hours and language clubs.
A B.A. degree at the University requires the fulfillment of a foreign language requirement. Students must fulfill this requirement by the end of their sophomore year. Please see the Bachelor of Arts Degree Requirements.
Undergraduates who choose to pursue a major or minor in the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures may wish to consider complementing their studies with the dual major in international affairs, with the teacher education program, or with any of the other majors and minors available through the University of New Hampshire. Such coursework will not only broaden a student's intellectual horizons, but may also serve to enhance his or her employment opportunities or prospects for graduate education.

LLC 444H - Honors/Human Rights and the Disappeared in Latin American Culture

This course is situated at the intersection of Latin American culture and Human Rights (1973-2020). Through our examination of case studies dealing with violations of Human Rights and forced disappearances in Central America, Colombia, Mexico, and the Southern Cone, the course uses methodologies from the humanities to explore the poetics/politics of mourning, the search for the disappeared, transitional justice, and memory practices by examining cultural production such as novels, poems, music, documentaries, films, performances, and visual arts.

LLC 444I - US Latinx Cities: Urban Culture, Society and Space

This course will explore urbanism of four US Latinx Cities: Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami, and New York. We will examine how Hispanics have historically shaped and changed the landscape of each of these cities in the United States through various forms of cultural production such as literature, music, film and television as well as discuss the social issues that these cities and communities face such as social inequality, gentrification, race relations, sexuality/gender, and transportation.

LLC #555 - Discover Cuba: An Arts Experience

This discovery course is designed to provide students with first-hand experience of the art, history, culture, music and visual arts of Cuba. The course combines an online academic class with on-site experiential learning though a fourteen day trip to Cuba. The course takes a highly contextual approach, locating the artwork in its historical, social, economic and cultural context for students to analyze and understand the complexities of modern Cuba.

The World Languages capstone consists of a semester-long exploration of the language learning enterprise, study of life-long language learning strategies, reflection on intercultural competence, and development of comprehensive digital portfolio, including a reflection on the course of study and a language assessment as well as a culminating project.
