Applied Animal Science: Companion Animal Science Concentration (A.A.S.)

http://colsa.unh.edu/tsas/aas/companion-animal-science

Animal companionship provides millions of people with an oasis in a hectic, impersonal world. Pet owners consistently seek quality professional services for pets that are often considered members of the family.  The companion animal science concentration prepares students to work in specialized areas by choosing one of two tracks; Applied Animal Behavior or Veterinary Assisting and Animal Management. Both tracks focus on traditional companion animals such as dogs, cats, along with other domestic species. Actual field and work/volunteer experience takes place the second year along with academic coursework. Through local partnerships, all tracks complete a capstone course supporting the individual care and population management of community shelter animals.

Additionally, each track aligns with professional industry organizations’ learning objectives and skills for certification after graduation. Depending on the organization and student, additional applied hours may be required before a certification exam may be taken. Organizations include but are not limited to: Certification Council for Pet Dog Trainers and Behavior Consultants, International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants, International Professional Groomers, and the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America that provide certification for veterinary assistants.

Companion animal science is a diverse career area that requires specialized knowledge and applied skills. We look forward to guiding students onto the correct career pathway and/or preparing for them to meet future academic goals.
